Bollywood’s biggest moments in New York

The 18th edition of the IIFA awards, kicked off in New York, in July 15 at the world famous Metlife Stadium, home to the New York Jets. And it was a blast! This year it was hosted by Karan Johar and Saif Ali Khan and surely it became a hilarious affair. The biggest winners included stars like Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, with impressive wins by veterans Anupam Kher and Shabana Azmi.

Here is a list of the winners.

  1. Best Film: Neerja

Arguably the best film of the year, winning the top award came as no surprise for cinegoers. The Sonam Kapoor Starrer film made a whopping 119 crores worldwide.

 

2. Best Director: Anirudh Roy Chaudhury for Pink

The second most coveted film of 2016, Pink won hearts all over, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Tapsee Pannu and Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Taring. Which broke box office records worldwide.
3. Best Actor: Shahid Kapoor for Udta Punjab

Probably the most controversial role of his career, Shahid Kapoor bagged the best actor award, silencing his critics for good measure.
4. Best Actress: Alia Bhatt for Udta Punjab

Following the highest grossing film of her career yet, Alia Bhatt broke all stigmas by winning best female. Deserving the accolade in every sense. She also won hearts in many ways than one.

 

5. Best Supporting Actor: Anupam Kher for M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

Serving the movie industry for more than 25 years. The grand old father of Bollywood again wins it again at the young age of 62. Proving that age again is just a number.

 

6. Best Supporting Actress: Shabana Azmi for Neerja

Likewise the male counterpart another veteran showed the newcomers how it’s done by bagging the award again for the umpteenth time. At the age of 66, she has showed the world that she still got it.

 

7. Best Female Debutante: Disha Patani for M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

Probably the most Googled female actress of 2016. The 25 year old heartthrob won our hearts again and this time she has proof to show. Winning the best debutante is another small milestone in her soon to be illustrious career.

 

8. Best Male Debutante: Diljit Dosanjh for Utda Punjab

A versatile singer and now an actor, Diljit Dosanjh never fails to impress, bagging the best debutante at this year’s awards. We hope to see much great thing from him.
9. Best Actor in a comic role: Varun Dhawan for Dishoom

The prince of Bollywood has struck again with another award winning performance in Dishoom, which proves his quality for both serious and comic roles. Safe to say that sky is the limit for this lad.
10. Lifetime Achievement: A. R. Rahman

None can match his excellence in the world, and IIFA took the time to pay homage to this great musician we call ours, for his tireless contribution to music for 25 long years. Here’s to saluting the legend in every sense of the word.

 

11. IIFA Woman of the year: Tapsee Pannu

For her brilliant and mind bending performances throughout the year IIFA awarded this young talent, the respect of woman of the year.
