Enigmatic British pop legend George Michael passed away last night at the age of 53, in the comfort of his own home in Oxfordshire on 25th December this year. He rose to fame with his band named Wham! along with band-mate Andrew Ridgeley in the 1980’s with singles like “Last Christmas” and “Wake me up “which became instant sensations across the then music scene, and is still played and cherished by music lovers all over the world. In the recent superhero movie “Deadpool” released this year there were numerous references to his work and art, which goes to show how popular his work still is in the current generation. One can always hear him play in any radio during Christmas with his hit song “Last Christmas” which is still a sensation amongst youngsters nowadays.
In 1987, he launched his first studio album, “Faith” which sold over 20 million copies worldwide, with hit singles like “Careless Whisper” and “Everything she wants” which went on to win the Album of the year award at the Grammys. Subsequently he released more albums like “Listen without Prejudice”, “Five Live”, “Older” and “The best of George Michael “.
Apart from his solo acts he had musical collaborations with Aretha Franklin, Elton John and many other eminent artists. The Billboard Magazine rates him as one of the best-selling British acts of all time.
Since his death on Christmas day, social media has been flooded with messages and obituaries by eminent artists and well as music connoisseurs and fans alike, including the likes of Elton John, Mary J. Blige, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Brian May and many others. His death is being mourned by his record labels as well namely Columbia and Sony who has released press releases after his demise.
Elton John has instagrammed “I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend – the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. My heart goes out to his family, friends and all of his fans.” This is true as one may go by generations until a similar artist of his calibre may come around.
