Rape and Murder of Asifa: A Sickening Justification of Religion

The eight years old child, Asifa Bano’s rape and murder put Indian culture, philosophy, ancient knowledge into shame and at the same time what is more stunning is the way some Hindus are justifying this in the name of religion. Let us take a moment here. Rape has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with rape. It is an eight years old child we are talking about and this incident is absolutely sickening.

17 he January, in the morning when Asifa’s father was all blank and worried about his missing daughter, one of his neighbours ran to him only to break the news of the finding his daughter’s dead body in a bush. “I knew something horrible had happened to my girl,” Mr Pujwala, a 52-year-old father told the BBC when his wife Naseema Bibi was sitting nearby murmuring Asifa’s name.

Her father belongs to the Muslim nomadic shepherds called Gujjars who crisscross the Himalayas with their goats and buffaloes. This incident has created a chaos in Kashmir, is a place with the Muslim majority. The incident has shocked the community and of course, it has shocked humanity. Eight men, including a retired government official, four police officers and a juvenile in connection with Asifa’s death have been arrested. Two ministers from the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attended a rally in support of the accused.

12th of January, in the afternoon she went to the forest to bring the horses home, but she didn’t return. On 12th they lodged a police complaint but the police were not helpful, in fact, one of them said that Asifa might have ‘eloped’ with a boy. After a lot of protests from the Gujjars, two police officers were given the job of finding her. One of those two assigned officers, Deepak Khajuria, was himself arrested in connection with the crime.

Five days later, her body was found. “She had been tortured. Her legs were broken,” recalled Ms Naseema, who had rushed to the forest along with her husband to see the body. “Her nails had turned black and there were blue and red marks on her arm and fingers.” After her body was found the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti, ordered an investigation by the crime branch. According to the investigators, she was confined in a local temple and was given sedative which kept her unconscious. The charge sheet alleges that she was “raped for days, tortured and then finally murdered”. She was strangled to death and then hit on the head twice with a stone.

This incident does not need to be justified by religion or any other logic. This is a brutal crime and the ones who are associated with such crime should be given the death penalty. Stand for Asifa, seek justice for her so that no other Asifa has the same fate anymore.
